INTENDED USE

WeWALK Smart Cane helps visually disabled people to walk more confidently. The aim of this study is to alert visually disabled people over obstacles where located in the level of the area between waist and head in front of them since they are not able to notify these kinds of obstacles via their existing white canes. So that the product will be the part of an assistive technology where helps visually disabled people to walk with fewer accidents.

This product will include a walking cane or stick and a control centre where communicates with the mobile platforms of the visually disabled person. It is able to direct the user via a set of sensor systems such as vibration motor, ultrasonic sensors.

This product will be equipped with the known technologies such as wireless communication, battery charging, voice menu. It is designed by considering to provide comfort and easy use where creates a preferable advantages comparing the legacy cane designs. In the case of having a problem at the control centre (electronic design), the visually disabled people are able to use the cane as a legacy white cane. So that the design still has the normal legacy white cane functionality. The device gets convenience to their life with navigation functionality not only by compass that built-in but also by special interactive navigation software for visually disabled people on mobile device which is connected wireless with the cane.

Compass calibration should be done prior to use navigation service. The software structure is constructed in manner of open platform and it will provide creativity to people who can put solution on specific case or who want develop software for the cane on mobile side. Therefore, it is designed as a wearable product which is an add on of mobile phone of visually disabled person.

Components of the WeWALK

Ultrasonic Sensor

Your WeWALK has an ‘ultrasonic radar’ system to detect obstacles. The distance of the alert is well adjusted to move you more comfortable. Do not press on the ultrasonic sensor positioned at the front of the handle or try to manipulate it in any way. Any damage to this sensor may cause the product to perform poorly.

Vibration Buttons

When the WeWALK is switched on and obstacles are detected, the two buttons will vibrate. Vibration buttons can vibrate both together and also they can work separately for guidance while navigating. It is important that you do not press the buttons as this will deaden the vibration intensity. You should experiment with your hand position to get maximum sensitivity. The wearing of thick gloves is not recommended as this will also deaden the intensity.

Speaker and Microphone

WeWALK has a speaker and microphone for voice commands and Smart Cane notifications.

Power Button

Use the power button in order to turn the WeWALK on or off.

TouchPad

The touch pad works by sensing your finger movement and pressure. Touchpad will be used to control connected mobile phone. Usage with the gloves is not recommended since this may restrict the performance of the touchpad. Predefined gestures can be seen below. In order to charge the battery of your WeWALK plug the supplied power adapter cable’s micro USB end into the micro USB input on the cane. Plug the USB end of the cable into the USB input on the power adapter. Then plug the adapter into the mains socket.

Installing the White Cane

In this section it is exlpained how to install a white cane to your WeWALK in case you need to replace the one you use with another.

  1. Unscrew and remove the white cane adaptor of your WeWalk
  2. Untie the knot in the elastic rubber cord of the White Cane, pass both ends of the cord through the white cane adaptor and tie a knot again. You can cut the rest of the cord if necessary.
  3. Screw the cane with the white cane adaptor to the WeWALK.

Attaching the wrist strap

You can attach the supplied wrist strap to your WeWALK to prevent it from damage by being dropped or provide an additional way of carrying it.

  1. Thread the thin loop of string through the wrist strap attachment hole
  2. After the loop is fully threaded, open it and pass the strap handle through the loop.
  3. Pull the remainder of the strap handle upwards to secure the wrist strap to the unit.

You can fold the cane and use the wrist strap of your WeWALK to bind them together as shown in the Folding your WeWALK section. Be carefull by folding/unfolding the cane because of the tension in the elastic rubber cord.

Switching On/Off Your WeWALK

In order to switch your WeWALK on or off press the power button and hold it down until the cane vibrates and plays the opening/closing sound. The power button is located underneath the device. Refer to the Components of the WeWALK section to check the position of this button.

Holding Your WeWALK

The recommended holding position for your WeWALK is on your waist area at an angle of about 45 degrees to floor.

The WeWALK is designed to be suitable for both left-handed and right-handed people. The thumb should be placed on the middle of the both vibration buttons, that way the user will be able to feel vibrations of both buttons. If the cane length is also correct, this will provide a natural grip to the user and the ultrasonic sensor will have the optimal angle for highest performance.

Using Your WeWALK

The “traditional” white cane is used by moving the cane from side to side in a tapping or sliding motion where the next footstep will fall. This ensures that obstacles can be detected in the user’s immediate vicinity by utilizing the tip of the cane to touch the obstacle. The WeWALK has been designed as a primary mobility aid for visually disabled people, as it incorporates a white cane. However, obstacle detection is obtained via the ultrasonic sensors incorporated into the handle, thus giving more advanced warning to the user of obstacles in their path and between head and waist. When using the WeWALK, it is important to use traditional white cane skills especially for locating down drops such as curbs and steps.

Before you start using the WeWALK, experiment it with the ranges to find out the limits, capabilities of the product. Set the length of the white cane according to your height. There are four different length options for white cane.

The Smart Cane is designed to detect the obstacles between your head and waist level, so the obstacles in this range should be detected around 1m before hitting the obstacle. In the following example the obstacle has 170cm height and if the person is 175cm tall he should hit the obstacle. The green area indicates the range of the detection area, in these distance the Smart Cane vibrates and warns the user about the obstacle.

The WeWALK is modeled on the traditional white cane and so in the unlikely event that the electronics fail while you are out, you will still be able to use it as a traditional white cane to reach your destination.

FAQ

Are there any obstacles/objects that WeWALK cannot detect?

It is not possible for the WeWALK to detect drops in ground level, such as stairs, curbs and holes and therefore it is important to maintain good traditional cane skills when using the WeWALK to locate down drops. The WeWALK might not detect soft fabrics or small obstacles at the limit of the range setting. As a rule it works best with hard surfaces, as these give a stronger ultrasonic echo. The WeWALK can detect objects at a distance of between 80 and 250 cm from the ultrasonic sensor.

Is WeWALK suitable for use in rainy wheather?

Heavy or torrential rain will stop your WeWALK from working properly and should be avoided. Prolonged or repeated exposure to water or heavy rain must be prevented at all costs as it may cause permanent water-damage to your WeWALK. If you are out with your WeWALK and are caught in heavy rain, you should immediately switch the cane off and fit a cover to protect it during the period of heavy rain. You can continue to use the WeWALK to navigate as a traditional white cane during the rain but the object detection functions will not be available whilst the cover is fitted. You can remove the cover, switch on your WeWALK and continue your journey as normal once the rain passes. If your cane does get wet, allow it to dry naturally in the open air at room temperature.
