Breaking Barriers in Germany: An Interpreter’s Journey with the WeWALK Smart Cane 2

We recently had the pleasure of meeting Safkan Öcal in Germany, where he shared his powerful story and first impressions of WeWALK Smart Cane 2. Safkan is a 29-year-old professional interpreter whose parents are originally from Turkey. Having been blind since birth, Safkan has spent his life navigating the challenges of the physical world, and his insights as a language professional and long-time white cane user offer a unique perspective on how Smart Cane 2 is redefining independence.

A Lifeline for Daily Safety

For Safkan, the most immediate impact of the Smart Cane 2 is the security provided by its obstacle detection sensors. He spoke about the physical toll that navigating without high-tech assistance can take. “As a person who has been blind since birth, walking on the street without obstacle detection is a bit difficult,” Safkan explained. He shared the reality of traditional cane use: “I have hit my head many times, broken my nose… and through this obstacle detection with the new Smart Cane 2, that will no longer happen”.

He emphasized that this technology is not a luxury, but a necessity that fundamentally changes how he interacts with his environment. “This obstacle detection would be very, very, very helpful in my everyday life and make my daily life easier,” he noted.

Navigating the World with AI

Beyond physical safety, Safkan was particularly impressed by the integration of cutting-edge software and artificial intelligence within the device. As an interpreter who relies on precision and clear communication, he found Smart Cane 2’s navigation capabilities to be a game-changer for his professional and personal autonomy.

“The navigation system, with the AI—the integration with the AI—is likewise very helpful for orienting myself and navigating back and forth,” Safkan said. For him, the ability to move through the world with a “smart” companion is a significant upgrade for his routine. “It is really a very, very, very good thing for my daily life,” he shared, concluding that “in any case, I find the product very excellent”.

Safkan’s journey reminds us that while the white cane has been a symbol of independence for decades, the Smart Cane 2 is the next step in ensuring that independence is paired with the safety and information that everyone deserves. We are grateful to Safkan for his time and his feedback as we continue to move forward together.
