A New Kind of “Love Story”: Moh Jetha’s Journey to Renewed Independence

Moh Jetha, a London-based retiree with a background in hotel financing and property management as well as a chocolate shop owner, recently faced a significant shift in his life after losing most of his vision within a few months. However, since adopting the WeWALK Smart Cane 2, he describes the experience as a complete "life-changer".

Regaining the Confidence to Step Outside

Before discovering WeWALK, Moh admitted to a growing fear of leaving his own home. “I got to the stage where I would be scared to go outside my front door… even with a normal white mobility cane, I didn’t have the confidence any longer,” he shared.

The transition to the Smart Cane 2 provided the “trigger” he needed to reclaim his autonomy. Starting with small walks around his local neighbourhood, Moh gradually expanded his range. Today, he confidently walks to the local shops, the pharmacy, and the medical practice, noting that “my independence has come back”.

Navigating London with Precision

Living in a busy city like London requires navigating complex public transport and avoiding varied obstacles. Moh highlights some specific features that have become essential to his daily routine:

  • Obstacle Detection: While traditional canes help with ground-level hazards, they often miss chest-high or head-height obstacles. “With the WeWALK Smart Cane, I now can walk with confidence because if I’m coming up against an obstacle that is chest high or higher… the cane will emit the appropriate sound to warn me,” Moh explains.
  • Live Transport Features: As a frequent user of London’s bus network, Moh relies on the app to direct him to the nearest stop and provide real-time updates on approaching buses. Once on board, the cane counts down the stops, alerting him exactly when he reaches his destination.
  • Hands-Free Integration: To keep his hands free and maintain awareness, Moh pairs his cane with Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, allowing him to hear navigation and transport alerts directly through his eyewear.

Professional Support When It Matters Most

Moh also shared his first experience using WeASSIST, WeWALK’s live visual assistance service, during a solo hotel stay. Struggling to see the keys on the hotel phone to call reception, he connected with a trained WeASSIST agent through the app. “The gentleman at the other end of the call could see through my phone camera and directed me to the zero key without any hesitation at all,” Moh recalled, describing the experience as “stress-free”.

Moments like these are exactly why WeASSIST exists; a trained human assistant, just a tap away by the WeWALK App, ready to help with whatever the moment calls for!

A Modern Love Story

Moh’s enthusiasm for his new tool is perhaps best captured by a humorous story from the day his cane arrived. After spending the day learning the features and practicing both indoors and out, he found himself so impressed that he didn’t want to let it go.

When his wife headed to bed that evening, Moh followed with his new device in hand. When she jokingly asked if he was really bringing the cane with him, he gave a response that has since become our favourite story: “I’ve really fallen in love with this cane… so tonight, I’m taking my cane with me!”.

Moh summarizes the impact simply: “It’s such a great product… the features are again something that I never dreamed could happen with a white cane”.
