From Perth with Persistence: Jenny Dawson’s Story with Smart Cane 2

For Jenny Dawson, a 63-year-old from Perth, Australia, mobility is second nature. Having used a traditional cane for over 40 years, she describes herself as a "very proud older lady who is very independent". Living as part of a totally independent blind couple with her husband, Jenny has raised two sons and considers herself to be on the high end of mobility independence. Whether using public transport or taxis, she is highly skilled at navigating her community.

First Impressions: "The Concept is Fantastic"

Jenny is no stranger to the evolution of assistive tools, noting:

“I’ve seen a lot of different technology come and go over the years”.

When she first started using the Smart Cane 2, her reaction was immediate:

“My first impression was that the concept is fantastic”.

She believes the device has fantastic potential, describing it as “an added layer of thinking on top of actually being able to get around”.

A Team You Can Be Heard By

One aspect of the WeWALK journey that Jenny particularly values is the open line of communication with the developers.

“I love the fact that we have so much access to you to be able to discuss issues because you don’t often get that with manufacturers,” she noted.

Adapting the Cane to New Environments

Jenny is even looking for ways to use the cane’s technology in new environments, such as “turning it on its side to help me find doorways” while indoors. Her final message to others who might find technology challenging is one of encouragement:

“To anyone who might be struggling with the cane, just be persistent because I think you’ll get something out of it in the end”.
